My dear countrymen, Namaskar, Welcome to Mann Ki Baat. But, we can never forget this day, the 26th of November. It was on this very day that the country had come under the most dastardly terror attack. Terrorists had made Mumbai shudder… along with the entire country. But it is India’s fortitude that made us surmount the ordeal; we are now quelling terror with full ardor. I pay homage to all of them who lost their lives in the Mumbai attack. Today, the country is in remembrance of those brave hearts who made the supreme sacrifice during the attack.

My family members, this day, the 26th of November is extremely significant on one more account. It was on this very day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly had passed and adopted the Constitution of India. I remember… in the year 2015, when we were celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar, a thought had struck the mind to observe the 26th of November as Constitution Day. And since then, every year, we have been celebrating this day as Constitution Day. I extend my best wishes to all countrymen on the occasion of Constitution Day. And together we shall certainly attain the resolve of a developed India, according priority to citizens’ duties.

Friends, all of us know that the Constitution took 2 years 11 months and 18 days for coming into being. The oldest member in the Constituent Assembly was Shri Sachidananda Sinha Ji. The Draft of our Constitution came up after close study of the Constitution of over 60 countries; after long deliberations. After readying the Draft, before the final structure shaped up, over 2000 Amendments were re incorporated in it. Even after the Constitution came into force in 1950, till this day, a total of 106 Amendments have been carried out in the Constitution. In consonance with the times, circumstances and requirements of the country, various Governments carried out Amendments at different times. But this too has been a misfortune that the Constitution’s first Amendment pertained to curtailing the Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression. Whereas, through the 44th Amendment, the wrongs committed during the Emergency had been duly rectified.

Friends, it’s again inspiring that out of the same members of the Constituent Assembly who were nominated, 15 were Women. One such Member was Hansa Mehta Ji, who raised her voice for the sake of rights and justice to women. During that period, India was one of the countries whose Constitution enabled Voting Rights to women. In the process of nation building, collective development is possible only with support from everyone. It’s a matter of inner satisfaction for me that in adherence to the farsightedness of the framers of the Constitution, the Parliament of India has now passed the NARI SHAKTI VANDAN Act. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is an example of the Sankalp Shakti, the strength of the resolve of the Democracy. This will provide a fillip to the pace of accomplishing our resolve of a developed India.

My family members, when the people at large take charge of nation building, no power in the world can stop that country from moving forward. Today, it is clearly visible in India that many transformations are being led by the 140 crore people of the country. We have seen a direct example of this during this festive season. Last month in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ I had laid emphasis on ‘Vocal for Local’ i.e. buying local products. Within the last few days, business worth more than Rs. 4 lakh crore has been done in the country on Diwali, Bhaiya Dooj and Chhath. And during this period, tremendous enthusiasm was seen among the people in buying products Made in India. Now even our children, while buying something at the shop, have started checking whether Made in India is mentioned on them or not. Not only that, nowadays, people do not forget to check the Country of Origin while purchasing goods online.

Friends, just as the very success of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ is becoming its inspiration; the success of ‘Vocal For Local’ is opening the doors to a ‘Developed India – Prosperous India’. This campaign of ‘Vocal For Local’ strengthens the economy of the entire country. The Vocal For Local campaign is a guarantee of employment. This is a guarantee of development; this is the guarantee of balanced development of the country. This provides equal opportunities to both urban and rural people. This also paves the way for Value Addition in local products, and if ever, there are ups and downs in the global economy, the mantra of Vocal For Local also protects our economy.

Friends, this sentiment towards Indian products should not be limited to festivals only. The wedding season as well has commenced now. Some trade organizations estimate that there could be a business of around Rs 5 lakh crore during this wedding season. While shopping for weddings, all of you should give importance to products made in India only. And yes, since the topic of marriage has come up, one thing has been troubling me off and on for a long time… and if I don’t open up my heart’s pain to my family members, who else do I do it with? Just ponder… these days a new milieu is being created by some families to go abroad and conduct weddings. Is this at all necessary? If we celebrate the festivities of marriages on Indian soil, amid the people of India, the country’s money will remain in the country. The people of the country will get an opportunity to render some service or the other at your wedding… even poor people will tell their children about that occasion. Can you extrapolate on this mission of ‘Vocal for Local’? Why don’t we hold such wedding ceremonies in our own country? It is possible that the kind of system you want may not be there today, but if we organize such events, systems will also develop. This is a topic related to very big families. I hope this pain of mine will definitely reach those big families.

My family members, another big trend has been seen during this festive season. This is the second consecutive year when the trend of buying some goods through cash payments on the occasion of Deepawali is gradually on the decline. That means, people are making more and more digital payments now. This is also very encouraging. You can do one more thing. Decide for yourself that for one month you will make payments only through UPI or any digital medium and not through cash. The success of the digital revolution in India has made this absolutely possible. And when one month is over, please share your experiences and your photos with me. મારા વ્હાલા દેશવાસીઓ, નમસ્કાર, મન કી બાતમાં આપનું સ્વાગત છે. પરંતુ, 26મી નવેમ્બરનો આ દિવસ આપણે ક્યારેય ભૂલી શકતા નથી. આ જ દિવસે દેશ સૌથી ભયંકર આતંકવાદી હુમલા હેઠળ આવ્યો હતો. આતંકવાદીઓએ સમગ્ર દેશની સાથે મુંબઈને પણ હચમચાવી નાખ્યું હતું. પરંતુ તે ભારતની મનોબળ છે જેણે અમને અગ્નિપરીક્ષામાં આગળ વધ્યા; અમે હવે સંપૂર્ણ ઉત્સાહ સાથે આતંકને કાબૂમાં કરી રહ્યા છીએ. મુંબઈ હુમલામાં જીવ ગુમાવનારા તમામને હું શ્રદ્ધાંજલિ આપું છું. આજે, દેશ એ બહાદુર હૃદયોને યાદ કરી રહ્યો છે જેમણે હુમલા દરમિયાન સર્વોચ્ચ બલિદાન આપ્યું હતું.

મારા પરિવારના સભ્યો, આ દિવસ, 26મી નવેમ્બર વધુ એક હિસાબે અત્યંત મહત્વપૂર્ણ છે. આ જ દિવસે 1949 માં બંધારણ સભાએ ભારતનું બંધારણ પસાર કર્યું હતું અને તેને અપનાવ્યું હતું. મને યાદ છે… વર્ષ 2015માં, જ્યારે આપણે બાબાસાહેબ આંબેડકરની 125મી જન્મજયંતિની ઉજવણી કરી રહ્યા હતા, ત્યારે 26મી નવેમ્બરને બંધારણ દિવસ તરીકે મનાવવાનો વિચાર મનમાં આવ્યો હતો. અને ત્યારથી, દર વર્ષે, આપણે આ દિવસને બંધારણ દિવસ તરીકે ઉજવીએ છીએ. હું બંધારણ દિવસના અવસર પર તમામ દેશવાસીઓને મારી શુભકામનાઓ આપું છું. અને સાથે મળીને આપણે નાગરિકોની ફરજોને પ્રાધાન્ય આપીને વિકસિત ભારતના સંકલ્પને ચોક્કસપણે પ્રાપ્ત કરીશું.

મિત્રો, આપણે બધા જાણીએ છીએ કે બંધારણને અસ્તિત્વમાં આવતાં 2 વર્ષ 11 મહિના અને 18 દિવસનો સમય લાગ્યો હતો. બંધારણ સભાના સૌથી જૂના સભ્ય શ્રી સચ્ચિદાનંદ સિંહાજી હતા. આપણા બંધારણનો ડ્રાફ્ટ 60 થી વધુ દેશોના બંધારણના નજીકના અભ્યાસ પછી આવ્યો છે; લાંબી ચર્ચા પછી. ડ્રાફ્ટ તૈયાર કર્યા પછી, અંતિમ માળખું આકાર લે તે પહેલાં, તેમાં 2000 થી વધુ સુધારાઓ ફરીથી સામેલ કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા. 1950માં બંધારણ અમલમાં આવ્યા પછી પણ આજદિન સુધી બંધારણમાં કુલ 106 સંશોધનો કરવામાં આવ્યા છે. દેશના સમય, સંજોગો અને જરૂરિયાતોને અનુરૂપ, વિવિધ સરકારોએ જુદા જુદા સમયે સુધારા કર્યા. પરંતુ આ પણ એક કમનસીબી છે કે બંધારણનો પહેલો સુધારો વાણી સ્વાતંત્ર્ય અને અભિવ્યક્તિની સ્વતંત્રતા પર કાપ મૂકવા સંબંધિત હતો. જ્યારે, 44મા સુધારા દ્વારા, કટોકટી દરમિયાન કરવામાં આવેલી ભૂલોને યોગ્ય રીતે સુધારવામાં આવી હતી.

મિત્રો, તે ફરી પ્રેરણાદાયક છે કે બંધારણ સભાના જે સભ્યોને નોમિનેટ કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા તેમાંથી 15 મહિલાઓ હતી. આવા જ એક સભ્ય હંસા મહેતાજી હતા, જેમણે મહિલાઓના અધિકારો અને ન્યાય માટે પોતાનો અવાજ ઉઠાવ્યો હતો. તે સમયગાળા દરમિયાન, ભારત એવા દેશોમાંનું એક હતું કે જેના બંધારણે મહિલાઓને મતદાનનો અધિકાર આપ્યો હતો. રાષ્ટ્ર નિર્માણની પ્રક્રિયામાં સૌના સહયોગથી જ સામૂહિક વિકાસ શક્ય છે. મારા માટે આંતરિક સંતોષની વાત છે કે બંધારણના ઘડવૈયાઓની દૂરદર્શિતાને અનુસરીને, ભારતની સંસદે હવે નારી શક્તિ વંદન કાયદો પસાર કર્યો છે. નારી શક્તિ વંદન અધિનિયમ એ સંકલ્પ શક્તિનું ઉદાહરણ છે, લોકશાહીના સંકલ્પની તાકાત. આનાથી વિકસિત ભારતના અમારા સંકલ્પને પૂર્ણ કરવાની ગતિને વેગ મળશે.

મારા પરિવારના સભ્યો, જ્યારે મોટા પ્રમાણમાં લોકો રાષ્ટ્ર નિર્માણની જવાબદારી સંભાળે છે, ત્યારે વિશ્વની કોઈ શક્તિ તે દેશને આગળ વધતા રોકી શકશે નહીં. આજે ભારતમાં સ્પષ્ટપણે દેખાઈ રહ્યું છે કે દેશના 140 કરોડ લોકોના નેતૃત્વમાં અનેક પરિવર્તનો થઈ રહ્યા છે. આપણે આ તહેવારોની સીઝનમાં તેનું પ્રત્યક્ષ ઉદાહરણ જોયું છે. ગયા મહિને ‘મન કી બાત’માં મેં ‘વોકલ ફોર લોકલ’ એટલે કે સ્થાનિક ઉત્પાદનો ખરીદવા પર ભાર મૂક્યો હતો. છેલ્લા કેટલાક દિવસોમાં રૂ.થી વધુનો બિઝનેસ થયો છે. દિવાળી, ભૈયા દૂજ અને છઠ પર દેશમાં 4 લાખ કરોડ રૂપિયાની આવક થઈ છે. અને આ દરમિયાન ભારતમાં મેડ ઈન પ્રોડક્ટ્સ ખરીદવામાં લોકોમાં જબરદસ્ત ઉત્સાહ જોવા મળ્યો હતો. હવે તો અમારા બાળકો પણ દુકાન પર કંઈક ખરીદતી વખતે તેમના પર મેડ ઈન ઈન્ડિયાનો ઉલ્લેખ છે કે નહીં તે જોવાનું શરૂ કરી દીધું છે. એટલું જ નહીં, આજકાલ લોકો ઓનલાઈન સામાન ખરીદતી વખતે કન્ટ્રી ઓફ ઓરિજિન ચેક કરવાનું ભૂલતા નથી.

મિત્રો, જે રીતે ‘સ્વચ્છ ભારત અભિયાન’ની સફળતા તેની પ્રેરણા બની રહી છે; ‘વોકલ ફોર લોકલ’ની સફળતા ‘વિકસિત ભારત – સમૃદ્ધ ભારત’ના દરવાજા ખોલી રહી છે. ‘વોકલ ફોર લોકલ’નું આ અભિયાન સમગ્ર દેશની અર્થવ્યવસ્થાને મજબૂત બનાવે છે. વોકલ ફોર લોકલ અભિયાન એ રોજગારની ગેરંટી છે. આ વિકાસની ગેરંટી છે; આ દેશના સંતુલિત વિકાસની ગેરંટી છે. આ શહેરી અને ગ્રામીણ બંને લોકોને સમાન તકો પૂરી પાડે છે. આનાથી સ્થાનિક ઉત્પાદનોમાં વેલ્યુ એડિશનનો માર્ગ પણ મોકળો થાય છે, અને જો ક્યારેય વૈશ્વિક અર્થતંત્રમાં ઉતાર-ચઢાવ આવે છે, તો સ્થાનિક માટે વોકલનો મંત્ર પણ આપણા અર્થતંત્રને સુરક્ષિત કરે છે.

મિત્રો, ભારતીય ઉત્પાદનો પ્રત્યેની આ ભાવના માત્ર તહેવારો પૂરતી મર્યાદિત ન હોવી જોઈએ. લગ્નની સિઝન પણ હવે શરૂ થઈ ગઈ છે. કેટલાક વેપારી સંગઠનોનું અનુમાન છે કે લગ્નની આ સિઝનમાં લગભગ 5 લાખ કરોડ રૂપિયાનો બિઝનેસ થઈ શકે છે. લગ્નની ખરીદી કરતી વખતે, તમે બધાએ ભારતમાં બનેલા ઉત્પાદનોને જ મહત્વ આપવું જોઈએ. અને હા, જ્યારથી લગ્નનો વિષય આવ્યો છે ત્યારથી એક વાત મને ઘણા સમયથી પરેશાન કરી રહી છે… અને જો હું મારા દિલની વેદના મારા પરિવારના સભ્યો સમક્ષ ન ખોલું તો બીજા કોની સાથે કરું? જરા વિચાર કરો… આ દિવસોમાં કેટલાક પરિવારો દ્વારા વિદેશમાં જઈને લગ્ન કરવા માટે એક નવો માહોલ બનાવવામાં આવી રહ્યો છે. શું આ બિલકુલ જરૂરી છે? ભારતની ધરતી પર લગ્નનો ઉત્સવ ભારતની જનતા વચ્ચે ઉજવીએ તો દેશનો પૈસો દેશમાં જ રહેશે. તમારા લગ્નમાં દેશની જનતાને કોઈ ને કોઈ સેવા કરવાની તક મળશે… ગરીબ લોકો પણ તે પ્રસંગ વિશે તેમના બાળકોને કહેશે. શું તમે ‘વોકલ ફોર લોકલ’ના આ મિશન પર એક્સ્ટ્રાપોલેટ કરી શકો છો? આપણે આપણા જ દેશમાં આવા લગ્ન સમારોહ કેમ નથી યોજતા? શક્ય છે કે તમને જે પ્રકારની સિસ્ટમ જોઈએ છે તે આજે ન હોય, પરંતુ જો આપણે આવા કાર્યક્રમોનું આયોજન કરીશું તો સિસ્ટમ્સ પણ વિકસિત થશે. આ બહુ મોટા પરિવારોને લગતો વિષય છે. હું આશા રાખું છું કે મારી આ પીડા તે મોટા પરિવારો સુધી ચોક્કસ પહોંચશે.

મારા પરિવારના સભ્યો, આ તહેવારોની સિઝનમાં એક અન્ય મોટો ટ્રેન્ડ જોવા મળ્યો છે. આ સતત બીજું વર્ષ છે જ્યારે દીપાવલીના અવસર પર રોકડ ચુકવણી દ્વારા કેટલીક વસ્તુઓ ખરીદવાનું વલણ ધીમે ધીમે ઘટી રહ્યું છે. એટલે કે, લોકો હવે વધુ ને વધુ ડિજિટલ પેમેન્ટ કરી રહ્યા છે. આ પણ ખૂબ જ પ્રોત્સાહક છે. તમે એક વધુ કામ કરી શકો છો. તમારા માટે નક્કી કરો કે એક મહિના માટે તમે માત્ર UPI અથવા કોઈપણ ડિજિટલ માધ્યમથી ચુકવણી કરશો, રોકડ દ્વારા નહીં. ભારતમાં ડિજિટલ ક્રાંતિની સફળતાએ આ એકદમ શક્ય બનાવ્યું છે. અને જ્યારે એક મહિનો પૂરો થાય, ત્યારે કૃપા કરીને તમારા અનુભવો અને તમારા ફોટા મારી સાથે શેર કરો. હું તમને અત્યારથી જ અગાઉથી શુભેચ્છા પાઠવું છું.

Urgent Action needed for protecting villages from rising sea levels because of Global Warming (Sea Barrier Conservation Project)

A. Introduction

An extensive portion of the land alongside the sea at Dandi and further south along the coastline in the Kantha Vibhag area has a problem of sea erosion and sea water overflowing into agricultural lands and over time this area has become unusable because of the saltiness of the land (know as Khanjar). This will continue to be a bigger problem because of rising oceans. Seasonal Monsoon flooding is another problem that has to be addressed, flooding in the villages during the rainy season disrupts life and it takes months to recover, proper draining and preparedness for the annual rains will alleviate the issue.

There is now an increasing need to protect the coastline and inner areas of our gams from sea water and erosion, especially because of rising waters due to global warming. Sea Water that has been flowing into the Khanjar areas over the years has been turning good arable farm land into unusable land caused by salty sea water and sea erosion. This can readily be reversed by erecting natural sea barriers where sea water overflows into the land in the form of sand and rock barriers and mangrove vegetation. Fish farmers who currently use sea water can continue doing so by piping sea water to the required pond areas.

Any solutions implemented should take into consideration monsoon rains together with the problems of drainage and runoff of much needed fresh water into the sea, it may be desirable to store this water perhaps in a lake. A feasibility study of all possible solutions should be presented before any project is started, this will all be done with the help and collaboration of the regional government departments.

As part of the Tree Planting Project, thousands of trees should be planted on the Dandi coastline as protection against natural calamities like cyclone, hurricane, Tsunami, etc.

B. Key Issues

– Severe sea erosion problems in some areas on the beachfront and further inland
– Sea levels rising every year due to climate change
– the solution of P.P. Gabions is not suitable
– Protection by using tetrapod mays be part of the solution, though high cost may be an issue
– If protection work is carried out by larger size stones, Gabions, Tetrapods, Beach will loose its
natural beauty
– a study needs to be conducted before a solution is implemented
– requires a permanent long term solution
– time is of the essence, if the government is unable to help with a timely solution then a community funded solution will be the only alternative.

C. Potential Solutions and Opportunities

The one solution is to put up barriers that will prevent sea water from overflowing into land areas, these barriers should be as high as the height of the highest watermark during high tide multiplied by two, this will ensure a permanent long term solution. Routine maintenance has to be planned on a periodic basis, perhaps quarterly to ensure that the barriers are not compromised due to soil erosion and wave action.

Land Reclamation – preventing sea water from overflowing into the area and reversing the saltiness of the Khanjar area will suddenly make hundreds of acres of land available for farming and other non-agricultural uses.

D. Challenges

1. Currently, sea water is used by the fishing industry in ponds, continuation of this supply is necessary by providing piping from the coastal area to the inland ponds on a limited basis.
2. Funding for the project
3. If nothing is done then there is a threat the entre Kantha Vibhag area may be overrun with sea water and it will result in loss of farmland and habitat.

E. Project Implementation

– All work that has to be done should be conducted with the help and permission of the relevant government authorities.
– A detailed project plan and timeline should be established
– Proper project management and controls to be in place

Mandhata Community – Who are We ???

Mandhata Community refers to all the Koli Patel Community people who originated from the Kantha Vibhag area in Navsari District of South Gujarat in India and also those who migrated to various overseas countries.

The first Koli Patel immigrants from Navsari District are recorded to have sailed for South Africa in 1860. Over the years since then many more joined them. Others traveled to Fiji and then to New Zealand as early as 1902. During the War years and later large numbers traveled to East Africa.

Initially they came to work on the plantations and to build roads and railways. As years passed the vast majority of them settled in the countries where they worked. The first immigrants were all young men who went back to their local villages to get married and return to be followed by their wives a little later.

It is these immigrants who identified themselves as Mandhata Community. It is estimated that they number over a hundred thousand. UK has over 40,000 settled mainly in large cities and are now involved in almost all professions and in every industry, as in other countries too.

A vast number of us settled overseas are now sixth and seventh generation. Even the later arrivals boast third and forth generation. Yet we have continued close relationship with our extended families in India. Most of us visit regularly and many have built homes on their ancestral land.

This site highlights the history and life of the Mandhata Patel Community.

This site has been built using a web content management framework, this will enable many people around the world to contribute content without any programming skills, all that is required is basic computer skills, this will ensure that content is contibuted by our communities around the world and also will ensure independance, so that no one person is tasked with the responsibility of maintaining the site. If you’d like to become a contributor, simply send an eMail message to our group email address, mandhataglobal.com. (exclude the period).

The site has been kept as simple as possible. Anyone with a basic knowledge of computing and internet will be able to interact. We are aware that a large number of you have a fund of knowledge to contribute to this site so that it can become a comprehensive repository of our history and heritage illustrated in words and pictures. In years to come this site would develop into a resource that our coming generations would refer to learn about their roots. We invite you to volunteer yourself as an administrator.

This site will be bilingual. We shall use English and Gujarati to reach as many of our people as possible.

Preamble

When in the quiet of the night the question arises in your mind as to who your forefathers were? Where did they come from? How did they live? And you desperately want to explore your roots, this website may help you..

Perhaps the obvious starting point of this inquiry could be our own first hand knowledge of the stories told by our fathers and grandfathers of their experiences in their villages and how they made it to the foreign lands all over the world.

From their own lips we have heard how a few young men from the villages found construction jobs building railways in Surat and other nearby cities. Back in village for holidays their offers of help led more youths to join them. At work they came in contact with other peoples and particularly the English who valued their construction knowledge. This broadened their horizon. When opportunities came their way to work for railways in East Africa, plantations in South Africa and New Zealand many volunteered and packed their bags.

My paternal and maternal grandfathers both came to Mombasa, in East Africa to work on the Railways in 1919/21. They were perhaps among the first there and in their own words life was terrible. They lived in tents and were always in fear of the wild animals. For the first year or two they survived on boiled lentils with some pepper and salt. Later they grew chillies and ginger. Apart from bhajan singing in the dim light of a lantern, other entertainment was zero. Life in South Africa or New Zealand was no different. This was soon after the First World War period. Political power struggle was intense among the European powers and British were digging in wherever they went.

Period prior to the Second World War was the 2nd wave of immigration for our people. Passports were easily available and hundreds of youths leaving their families behind boarded sea-going clippers and left in search of a better life. A number of them perished and for the many who made it, life was very, very hard in every respect. Homesickness gripped many.

Youth Leadership and Educational Seminar

Shree Amratbhai Jerambhai Patel (in blue Shirt) And Shreemati Taraben Amratbhai Patel of Machhad are residents in USA. Both are generous donors of our Samaj. They visit Gam almost every year and sponsor a number of project in Machhad, other Kantha Vibhag gams. They are particularly interested in educational projects which we organise year after year. Their generous sponsorship help students with scholarships and various educational seminars for the students. This Leadership Seminar was hosted by them and was held on 12th April 2014.
